ROE divides net income by shareholder equity. High leverage can inflate ROE even when underlying returns on assets are mediocre.

ROIC measures returns on total invested capital — debt and equity combined — and is often better for comparing capital-intensive businesses.

Use both, but always ask how much of ROE comes from financial engineering versus operational excellence.
